
How Master Key Systems Work: Levels, Cylinders, and Control
A master key system is an engineered arrangement of pin-tumbler or disc-cylinder locks in which individual keys open only their assigned doors, while a master key — or a series of master keys at different privilege levels — opens a defined subset of those doors. The architecture typically has at least three tiers: the change key, which opens one lock; the master key, which opens a defined group; and the grand master or great-grand master, which opens everything in the system. Larger campuses can add a fourth level — a great-grand master key held only by a building owner or property manager. Every cylinder in the system is machined to accept its change key and every key above it in the hierarchy, but nothing below. This is accomplished by adding extra sets of driver pins — called master wafers — inside each cylinder, which is why a master key system requires professional design rather than ad-hoc cutting.
The number of levels you need depends on your organizational structure. A single-tenant office suite in a New Brunswick commercial building might need only two tiers: individual office keys and one master for the office manager. A multi-floor research facility near College Avenue might need four, with separate master domains for administrative areas, laboratory corridors, server rooms, and an executive suite. Getting this architecture wrong at the design stage is expensive to correct — cylinders must be re-pinned or replaced.
